MSDS Changes are Here:

OSHA has implemented changes to the former MSDS notification system.  In an effort to reduce confusion and increase safety, Material Safety Data Sheets are becoming simply Safety Data Sheets.  This is much more than a simple name change.

In March 2012, OSHA updated HAZCOM standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) to sync up with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals.

Here are key features of the new standard:

  •    Hazard classification: Provides specific criteria for classification of health and physical hazards, as well as classification of mixtures
  •    Labels: Chemical manufacturers and importers will be required to provide a label that includes a harmonized signal word, pictogram, and hazard statement for each hazard class and category.  Precautionary statements must also be provided.
  •    Safety Data Sheets (SDS): Will replace MSDS sheets.  SDS sheets now have a specified 16 section format.

What does this mean for your company?

  •  Under the new regulations companies must train their employees on the new SDS system before December 31, 2013.
